Notes

Carved celtic cross on stepped square base. Hand holding rushes, St. Bride's emblem, carved on front shaft of cross. Inscriptions on polished stone on shaft and around base in English, Irish, Latin and Welsh.

A local community millennium project

The cross is built on the site of a mediaeval chapel dedicated to St. Ffraid. Details from information board at site: 'Ffraid is the Welsh name for the Irish saint Brigid who by tradition lived in early Christian times and enjoyed a great reputation as a miracle worker. One of the many legends describes how Ffraid travelled from Ireland to Wales. The story goes that when her father betrothed her to an Irish prince, rather than marry, she fled with her maidens to the seaside. There she cut a green turf for each to carry them over the sea to Wales. According to tradition they landed at Trearrdur Bay where she built a small chapel.'
