The Ucheldre Centre is a community effort to provide those who live in and visit Holyhead with a centre for arts events, exhibitions and other community activities of an educational and cultural kind. The heart of the Centre is a former Convent chapel belonging to a French Roman Catholic order of nuns. This became available following demolition of their Convent School in 1988 after its closure in 1982. The project was planned in 1989 as part of the regeneration of Holyhead. The site is owned by the Isle of Anglesey County Council who have leased the building to the Centre. Several new sculptures are planned for the grounds of the Centre.
The work can be seen as a symbol of the town trying to rise above the inertia of recession or as a leap towards a future in Europe (the figure is leaping towards Ireland). It may also be seen as a symbol of Welsh aspirations.
