Notes

Two Y-shaped uprights supporting three cross members forming Japanese style open gate.

Threshold was sponsored by the Forestry Commission and engineered by Ove Arup. The sculptor, Andrew Darke, looked to Japanese calligraphy: 'For me, some Japanese calligraphy has a strong three-dimensional flavour - I imagine the characters as though they are free-standing. I wanted to create a Torii Gate which would appear to be drawn in the sky in two dimensions when seen from the long front view and which would reveal unexpected sculptural forms as the viewer moved around it. In Japanese culture, the Torii Gate is associated with Shinto temples and to go through one is an act of mental and spiritual purification.'

Threshold was one of a number of sculptures commissioned for the Garden Festival of Wales in 1991/2 and some works remain on site.
