Notes

Information from Festival Park: 'The form is based on the skeletal structure of a shipping vessel.'

Information from Festival Park: Ark was supported by the Welsh Arts Council and sponsored by Burt Boulton and Haywood, and by Rowecord Engineering. The timber used to construct the work was donated by Burt Boulton and Haywood. The Ark was built at Burt Boulton and Haywood's premises on the Newport docks. 'Arriving there with an as yet incomplete idea of the form the piece would take, working alongside the company men and watching the ships trawl in and out of the bay with their consignments of timber destined to become the railway sleepers and transmission poles the company has been making for the past 150 years, the piece was gradually informed with ideas of transportation and communciation - the business of the company sponsoring his work and a lynchpin of the Welsh industrial boom earlier this century.'

A number of sculptures were commissioned for the Garden Festival of Wales in 1991/2 and some works remain on site.
