Notes

Male standing figure wearing full-dress military uniform and cloak slung over shoulders.Wearing military decorations, medals and clasps of a K.G.C.B. and of the Portugese Order of the Tower and Sword. Body slightly forward, right foot advanced and bearing weight. Left hand grasps hilt of sword, right arm in half-flexed position.

In 1912 the industrialist and politician, D.A. Thomas agreed to finance a series of statues for the Marble Hall within the newly-built Cardiff City Hall. The choice of subjects was put to the Welsh nation in a competition and James Havard Thomas assisted D.A. Thomas and a small commissioning team in the final selection of subjects and sculptors. The scheme was officially unveiled by David Lloyd George in October 1916.

Sir Thomas Picton was Wellington's chief lieutenant in the Peninsular War and the Waterloo Campaign. The sculptor intended to 'express that restless, unceasing energy, which he has been so often spoken of as transmitting to the regiments under his charge.'
