Notes

Octagonal cast-iron fountain canopy supported on slender cast iron columns with enriched caps, arches, spandrels, medallions containing carved birds and surmounted by small dome. The canopy is painted green with gold ornamentation.

Information from Parks Services: Grange Gardens was originally opened on 19 June 1895. It was designed as a formal public park and much of its original structure has been retained. However, over the years it had lost some of its features including the bandstand and MacFarlane drinking fountain. The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Cardiff County Council a 70% grant of £226,800.00 towards a comprehensive programme of restoration works within the park with restoration of the fountain canopy costing £40,000. The drinking fountain was one of a number of similar fountains dedicated to members of the Samuel family in Cardiff's parks including Grange Gardens and in Splott Park (no longer in situ). The original fountain in Grange Gardens had been erected by the family in memory of their brother Lewin L. Samuel and unveiled in 1909. The canopy was removed shortly after the Public Works and Wages Committee of the 9th July 1943 recommended that all similar fountain canopies be donated for the war effort. It is assumed that the drinking fountain was removed some time after this.
