Notes

Upright shaped piece of blue pennant stone with squadron crest and motto, and inscription on slate front. The site is a former airfield.

The work was commissioned by the 614 Squadron Association through Cardiff Bay Arts Trust which was established in 1990 as part of a policy on public art set out by Cardiff Bay Development Corporation. Over the first decade CBAT has worked with public institutions, private corporations and with the local community to enrich the experience for those who visit, live and work in the area. Following the wind up of CBDC, Cardiff Bay Arts Trust became CBAT The Arts & Regeneration Agency and continues to operate UK wide and internationally.

From 'The Bay and other Artwalks': To commemorate the 614 Squadron, the only royal airforce squadron to be raised in Wales during World War II, the artist chose blue pennant stone from a quarry close to his home and Welsh slate - which can be more finely inscribed - for the squadron crest and motto.
