Notes

Series of engraved pavers and upright stainless steel markers. Information from CBAT: 'The whole design is basd on a domino game into which workshop material is integrated. There are six sub-themes, each represented by a specific number of spots: language, currency, trade, local landmarks, local legends and pattern. It was felt that these six themes and the information presented within them gave a sense of the street's community spirit, historical and cultural diversity. There had been some discussions about how Tiger Bay got its name, places gone but not forgotten and names of local characters and celebrities connected to the area.'

Information from CBAT: 'Three artists commissioned by CBAT The Arts & Regeneration Agency worked with Butetown residents on a series of visual arts and writing workshops. The workshops formed the basis of the Bute Street Public Art Programme relating to the broad theme of Butetown: Past, Present and Future. The Bute Street Paving Project began with the intention of involving as large a cross section of the local community as possible, giving them an opportunity to contribute to the planned public artwork to be installed on Bute Street. Through the various workshops held at youth clubs, Saturday schools, day and community centres, a tremendous variety of material was generated in the form of pictures, words, reminiscences and pieces of memorabilia. The finished artwork forms a trail of imagery set in to Bute Street Paving. Beginning at St. Mary's Church it meanders back and forth across Bute Street, ending near West Close. At each crossing point the trail is highlighted with a stainless steel marker or 'bollard', which carries the name of the boarding house, shop, pub, warehouse or other business which occupied the spot in days past.'
