Each of the two corbels, which support the corner pilasters of the entrance to the former public baths and wash-houses, is filled, in a whimsical nod towards the function of this part of the building, with a carving of a mermaid, her body and tail forming a U-shape as she clasps the lower part of her tail close to her head with a raised hand. Her other hand she places over her head and gazes downwards at the passer-by. Exotic marine foliage surrounds her, one large frond passing across the lower part of the relief, covering her below the navel and masking the junction of body and upturned tail. | ||
