Notes

'Winter' is in the niche to the left of the chimney-piece on the righthand wall from the ballroom entrance, opposite 'Autumn'. Like 'Autumn', the figure is conceived as a more closed composition than 'Spring' or 'Summer', with the figure's right arm folded across the upper torso to hold the torch at her left side and her left arm folded across in the opposite direction to hold her drapery close to her. Her implied movement is altogether slower, the weight moving from the raised left heel to the right leg. Her cloak appears to be thicker and completely covers the top of the head ending in a roll of doubled material over the forehead. The statue is secured to the rear wall of the niche by a chain attached to the small of its back.
