Notes

The spandrels are above the first floor windows either side of the keystones of the central lights of the Palladian windows. (Unlike the niche statues, the spandrels are not duplicated across the two frontages of the News Room - see also Granby Street.) The figures are all kneeling or seated on the ground. As indicated by their inscribed scrolls, they represent six of the nine Muses; all have floral backgrounds. The Belvoir Street spandrels are: lefthand bay, lefthand spandrel - Euterpe, Muse of music and lyric poetry, holding a flute in both hands, an eagle perching in the upper right part of the spandrel (below the scroll bearing her name); righthand spandrel - Thalia, Muse of comedy, holding (unaccountably) a tragic mask in her left hand and a staff in her right, looking at a grapevine; central bay, lefthand spandrel - Melpomene, Muse of tragedy, holding a dagger in her right hand and a crown in her left; righthand spandrel - Clio, Muse of history, reading from a book held in her right hand, a trumpet in her left hand, and below this a pile of three books; righthand bay, lefthand spandrel - Terpsichore, Muse of dancing, crowned with a laurel wreath, appearing to be on the point of rising up, her arms raised above and behind her head, a tambourine in her right hand; Erato, Muse of love poetry, resting her chin on her right hand looking longingly at a [?]passion flower.
