- in incised Roman letters with whitening: (i) on W face of shaft and upper plinth: TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN / GRATEFUL / MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / GADDESBY / WHO LAID DOWN / THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918 [then follow the names of the 7 dead of Gaddesby, underneath which is:] GREATER LOVE HATH / NO MAN THAN THIS (ii) on E. face of shaft and upper plinth, lines 1 to 9 of W. face repeated, but followed by: THE WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945 [followed by 7 names, underneath which is:] THESE GAVE THEIR TOMORROWS / THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE YOUR TODAYS
