Notes | ||
Commerce personified stands in the centre of the relief, a castellated crown on her head. In her right outstretched hand, a cornucopia, in her left a sailing ship. The two boys beneath her arms are her offspring: Enlightenment with a lighted torch and laurel wreath, and Peace, with a palm. To the left of Commerce, receiving her cornucopia, are two women representing British Crafts and Manufacture, while the two women to the right (those to whom Commerce’s sailing ship is directed) represent the two hemispheres, East and West, bearing raw materials.
