Notes

A full description is given on a printed sheet mounted in a clip-frame, fixed to the front face of the pillar at the right of the gravelled enclosure containing the group. The following is an extract: ... ‘Voyages of Discovery’ is made from clay. It has been fired to stoneware temperature (1280° C) and refired (800° C) to fuse the metallic bronze lustre glaze onto the small details. It is both strong and weather resistant with colour permanent and unaffected by sunlight. It does however retain the characteristics of stoneware pottery and should be treated as such. The concepts behind the piece were inspired by standing stone circles such as those found at Avebury and Stonehenge. The bronze details suggest recorded wisdom and experience. Some of the images are derived from everyday life, others suggest a ‘creation’ story and written messages. ‘Voyages of Discovery’ is about travel through life, and as with Egyptian hieroglyphs, Sumerian cuneiform inscriptions on clay tablets or drawings on prehistoric pottery the marks may be indecipherable but human and enjoyable to ponder ...
