Notes | ||
A sculptural archway spanning Market Place approach. Triangular metal plinths at each side support metal piers with open work cut out designs on the front (approaching from Horsefair Street) and tubular cross struts spanning the other two faces. The cut out decorations represent the range of goods available in the market. The left pier has footwear, hosiery, underwear, etc., e.g. books, shoes, pants, gloves, tie, sock; the arch has food: a pineapple, bunch of grapes, leek, crab, eel, fish, sausages, etc.; and the right pier a mixture of goods including a loaf, cut flowers, potted plant, knife, fork, cup, teapot. The whole structure is painted black. | ||
