Notes

Relief medallion of a draped, half-length female holding a child, symbolising Charity

Erected from proceeds of a charity event organised by the Duchess of Montrose in 1884 to provide the Sick Children's Hospital in Scott Street with an out-patients department and dispensary. The result of a limited design competition held between Campbell Douglas and Sellars, John Baird and John Thomson, and John Burnet and Son, alterations had to be made to Sellars' design as it proved to be too expensive. The building was opened in October 1888. An extension to the west of the dispensary was built in 1897 housing nurses accomodation. This part has since been demolished. (1) The building also features a street lamp which incorporates one of the 'Chooky Burdies,' by Shona Kinloch, (Garnethill Lighting Project, 1993. See AN/068)
