The first proposal for the establishment of the Sick Children's Hospital was made in 1861. In 1880 a villa at 45 Scott Street was purchased for £2000 from Mr David Anderson with the intention of converting it into a hospital "to provide treatment for children of the poor suffering from non-infectuous diseases or accidents and to set up a dispensary for advice and medicine; to promote the advancement of medical science with reference to the diseaes of children and provide instruction for students [and] to diffuse among all classes of the community, and chiefly among the poor, a better aquaintance with the management of children during illness, to educate and train women in the special duties of children's nurses, and to instruct lady pupils in the care of sick children'. The work of converting the villa cot £12,510.10/- and was done by 'responsible tradesmen'. The hospital opened on 20 December 1882 (1) | ||
