Notes

North façade: There are two helmeted cherub heads on the corbels below the oriel window; cherub heads in the capitals; a shield with a sailing ship above the oriel; and two escutcheons comprising trophies of engineering and shipbuilding tools. East façade: Above the central window is a cartouche featuring a ship on the stocks

The design for the building won a competition organised by the Institute of Engineering and Shipbuilding for their new headquarters in 1896. George Washington Browne, of Edinburgh, was the assessor. Construction work commenced in March 1907 and the memorial stone was laid by the Duke of Argyll on 3 May 1907. The building was opened on 3 December 1908
