Notes | ||
In the spandrels above the main door are two reclining, draped female figures with attributes, representing Agriculture (sickle and wheat) and Wine Making (jug and grapes). Below these is a helmeted keystone head (Mercury), and two relief panels featuring candelabra supporting bowls of fruit with floral enrichments. Variations of these are repeated between the third storey windows. There are also five ornate wrought-iron balconies at the second storey windows
The building was erected as the New Club, a gentleman's club, from plans submitted in competition with four other Glasgow architects. Construction started in May 1877 and the building was opened on 6 February 1880. The cost of the building was approximately £35,000. Sellars designed all the interior fittings as well as the exterior details such as the ornate balconies which were manufactured by Walter Macfarlane & Co. The cast-iron details were manufactured by Adam Patrick. In 1884 the building became the Conservative Club. In 1979 it was converted to office use, and was later sold for further redevelopment as a suite of luxury offices. This was completed in 1981 and entailed the complete gutting of all the original interior fittings except the front door. The building was named in commemoration of the architect
