The busts are portraits of men connected with science, the arts, and commerce (from south to north): James Watt (science), Robert Burns (poetry), Joshua Reynolds (painting), David Hamilton (architecture), John Flaxman (sculpture), George Frideric Handel (music) and Robert Peel (politics). The busts are over arched pediments filled with the identifying attributes of each person. The pediments over the north and south entrances are filled with the Royal Arms (south), and the Arms of Glagow (north). Both of these have lyres above them

See AN/056/1/2. The small tablets immediately below the busts are said to have been carved with the name of the person portrayed. These inscriptions were (apparently) removed when the building became a Christian Science Church
