The City Engineer was instructecd by the Parks Department, sub-committee on the New Fine Art Galleries, to authorise the architects to order the block of marble and submit a design for the stone, on 2 August 1897. The Prince of Wales was invited to perform the ceremony but, due to his other commitments, was unavailable. The Duke of York was then approached. Having accepted the invitation he performed the ceremony on 10 Sept 1897 | ||
