He later took charge of the parishes of Loudon, and Dalkeith (1843) before moving to Glasgow. He became the editor of the 'Christian Instructor' (1849) and of 'Good Words' (1860) and published numerous books on religious themes and on his travels in Egypt, Palestine and India. He was appointed chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1857, and became Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1869. He was minister of the Barony Church, which stood near to the site of his monument, and ministered to a parish which comprised 87,000 people.
