The Rev. Dr. Norman MacLeod (1812-1872) was born in Campbeltown, the son of a minister, and was himself ordained a minister in 1838. He later took charge of the parishes of Loudon, and Dalkeith (1843) before moving to Glasgow. He was appointed chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1857, and became Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1869. He was minister of the Barony Church, which stood near to the site of his monument, and ministered to a parish which comprised 87,000 people.
