Notes | ||
The decorative plasterwork comprises ceiling groups, cornice groups, lunettes and roundels. Ceiling groups: Four groups above the main architrave, in the concave angles of the ceiling, comprising a standing figure flanked by two animals and produce representing each of the four continents: America (S.W. corner): A standing, semi-draped male in native American costume, flanked by two crouching Bison. Africa (S.E.): Standing, draped female in classical costume, flanked by two crouching lions. Europe (N.W.): Standing, draped female in classical costume, flanked by two crouching horses. Asia (N.E.): Standing, draped female in classical costume, flanked by two crouching camels. Cornice groups: Groups of two and four putti holding garlands of flowers at intervals across the entablature frieze. At each of the four angles, below the ceiling groups, is a neptune mask, and along the upper part of the cornice are dolphin masks. Lunettes: (south wall): Agriculture: A seated, semi-draped male flanked by a bull and a semi-draped putto. Art: Three semi-draped putti representing sculpture and painting beside a bust of Queen Victoria. Commerce: A semi-draped figure of Mercury, with caduceus, flanked by a putto and a ships prow. Roundels: (north Wall) Three figurative roundels. The outer roundels are of the arms of Glasgow with standing, draped male and female supporters. The inner roundels feature a seated, draped female, subject unknown. One of the roundels is a modern copy of one which was removed at an unknown date. Chandeliers: Four circular metal chandeliers with six standing, naked males holding torches with glass flames. There are also lion masks around the upper band.
The interior was restored in 1998. The chandeliers are copies of c. 1900 originals. One of the roundels is a cast of one of its neighbours and replaced one which was removed at an earlier date
