Notes | ||
The carved decoration is across the three facades of the massive City Improvement Trust block between Albion Street and Bell Street. The carved decoration comprises floral details, garlands, festoons, capitals, etc. The only figurative work is on the east façade above the main entrance and comprises two reclining female figures supporting a shield. There are six panels carved with the 'flowers of the home nations': two thistles; two roses; and two shamrocks, and a shield bearing the Arms of Glagow
The design for the building was selected in a competition held by the City Improvement Trust in 1899. Holmes and Jackson executed the carved work on the east and south façade in 1903, for £303.2.0. Their tender was accepted by the Corporation on 15 June 1903, and the contract signed on 8 Aug 1903.(1)
