Notes | ||
A hemispherical granite font with a carved band of Apothecary's Rose around the top, surmounting cruciate legs sitting in a collection dish. The font is actually a fountain, its water bubbling up through the central core. Set into this are underwater fibre-optic cables which illuminate the water from below. The font is set amidst concentric circles of square grey granite sets. The seat is a curved grey granite bench and is set to the west of the font against a wooden trellis. Pomeroy was influenced in his design for the font by the Blacader bosses in the nearby Glasgow Cathedral
The St. Nicholas Garden project was part of a larger scheme of area regeneration which encompassed the vicinity around Glasgow Cathedral. Funded by Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Regional Council and the European Regional Development Fund, the project cost £500,000. The font and seat were commissioned by Cunning Young & Partners (Gary Johnson, designer) and were made by Pomeroy at Jack Watson's stonemasons workshop between 6 Dec 1994 to 5 March 1995, spending 827 hours on the project. The garden was opened on 30 June 1995, and won the 'BALI National Landscape Award' (1995). The garden is presently closed to the public. (No on site inspection is possible)
