Notes

Symbolic depiction of the development of engineering relative to Glasgow University: from the bottom to the top are scenes including the Ark on the sea with whales and fish; a bearded man with compasses; a blacksmith by a volcano; a man within a wheel; a bird and a winged horse, and at the top a figure with a caduceus. The panel is also carved with various Masonic symbols

The panel was designed as an integral part of the building and its subject matter was chosen by the architects. They also suggested Kennington as the sculptor. A Committee of the Court was set up at the University and the design and the sculptor were eventually agreed upon. Kennington fell ill while working on the panel and it was completed by his assistants Eric Stanford and Archibald Robertson (1)
