Notes

Ellen, The Lady of the Lake. Standing, draped female figure at apex of Stewart Memorial Fountain

The fountain commemorates ex-Lord Provost of Glasgow Robert Stewart, of Murdostoun, and the Loch Katrine water scheme. Mossman sculpted the bronze statue. The statue was originally gilt, was rebronzed at a later date and finally cleaned and restored by Page & Park in 1988 as part of a comprehensive restoration of the fountain promoted by the Briggait Trust. The water was turned off in 1976 due to soaring maintenance costs and turned on again for the Glasgow Garden Festival, 1988

Ellen Douglas is the eponymous heroine of Sir Walter Scott's poem 'The Lady of the Lake'
