Description: human-size stainless steel mouse-trap with the words Picnic Area inscribed upon the plate.
'Picnic Area' was commissioned as part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail. David Fryer's sculpture is a large man-size mouse trap in stainless steel. It is placed close to the remains of the mill, one of the earliest cotton mills to be built in the Bury area, which occupied the site since the late eighteenth century, and near the car park, so that it is one of the first objects seen by visitors. The title 'PICNIC AREA' is picked out in blue paint on the baiting area of the trap. Fryer sees the work as a wry comment on the previous history of the site and its new use as a country park. The inclusion of the words 'Picnic Area' encourages the visitor to question whether the sculpture can be regarded as a public amenity or a tourist trap.
