Notes

Marble bust on square grey marble pedestal

Presented by his widow, Mrs Mary Wilson, who had been given the bust by a number of friends who had subscribed to it and hoped that it would be placed in a public building in the town. Abel Heywood offered it on behalf of Mrs Wilson and that it be placed in the new town hall. [There was also a portrait of George Wilson in the town hall. It was presented by Alexander Henry on behalf of subscribers. Accepted 17 December 1851.(1) (2)

George Wilson (1808-1870), whose main business interests were the management of railways and telegraphs, had a long involvement in the Liberal politics of Manchester, assisting in the movement that led to incorporation in 1838. He was to become more widely known through his work for free trade, serving as the chairman of the Anti-Corn Law League. His public services were recognised with a public testimonial of £10,000 and a portrait presented to the Corporation. Wilson died in December 1870.
