Notes

marble bust on square buff marble pedestal

The bust was presented by Charles Heywood on behalf of a few friends. It was accepted 20 October 1880(1).

William Romaine Callender was one of the leaders of the Conservatives in south-east Lancashire, being elected as MP for Manchester in 1874. His father, also William Romaine Callender, had been a Whig, who had campaigned for the incorporation and was elected to the first council. Callender jnr was also a prominent Freemason. He also supported a number of public institutions in the city including the Athenaeum, of which he was secretary for some twenty years. He died, aged 51, in January 1876.
