This bust of John Benjamin Smith was given to the council by Edwin Lawrence in 1882. Lawrence, Smith's son-in-law, had contacted the council in 1880 to determine that they would accept a bust indicating that he expected Adams-Acton to have completed the bust by the following year. John Benjamin Smith was a Manchester cotton merchant who had been a prominent figure in the Anti-Corn Law League. He swerved as Liberal MP for Stockport from 1852-1874. He died in September 1879. | ||
