White marble bust on square pink alabaster pedestal. There is a relief of coat of arms on the pedestal
The public movement to provide a bust of Vaughan came after he had been made a cardinal in 1893. The sculptor chosen for the commission was W. Charles May. Unlike most of the busts installed in the sculpture gallery, the bust of Cardinal Vaughan was officially unveiled, the ceremony being performed by Sir John Harwood. The arms of the diocese were included on the pedestal.
Herbert Albert Vaughan (1832-1903) was consecrated as Bishop of Salford in 1872, a position he held until he became Archbishop of Westminster in 1892. Vaughan expanded the Catholic church during his years in Salford, showing a willingness to involve himself in different aspects of the community.
