marble bust on black wood square pedestal

Halle died in 1895 and a public subscription was opened for a bust. [No record in Council minutes of this bust being presented?]

The pianist Charles Halle, born in Germany in 1819, came to Manchester in 1848 where after some initial doubts he settled and remained for the rest of his life. He re-invigorated the Gentlemen's Concert, and following the Art Treasures Exhibition he established his own orchestra. The Halle Orchestra performed at the recently opened Free Trade Hall and went on to establish its reputation as one of the leading provincial orchestras. Halle was also a key figure in encouraging music education and he lived long enough to see the opening of the Royal Manchester College of Music. Halle died in 1895.
