Notes

Black metal column supporting a polished metal flaming sword encircling the helmet of a Roundhead soldier. Set into the concrete around base of column are representations of artefacts associated with the Civil War including a cavalry boot. It surmounts a small tapered base made of stone bricks.

This sculpture stands in the centre of the main walkway, close to the entrance of Dukinfield Park, on a site previously occupied by an Edwardian fountain. In 1996 it was decided to replace the fountain, parts of which had been stolen, with a sculpture. It was commissioned as part of the Britain in Bloom celebrations. Stephen Broadbent was commissioned and he took for the theme of his sculpture one of the district's best remembered historical figures,

Sculpture recalls Duckenfield a local individual who played an important part in the Civil War. Robert Duckenfield (1619-1689), was a local landowner and Puritan, who became a commander in the Parliamentary army during the Civil War. He was raised to the rank of colonel in 1642. Duckenfield took part in fighting in Cheshire and, later, he helped to secure the Isle of Man. After the Restoration he was tried for his involvement in the court martial of the Earl of Derby but acquitted. He is buried in St Lawrence's, Denton.
