Notes

Memorial comprises a stepped pedestal on which stands the somewhat crudely carved statue of a soldier holding a rifle across his chest. On three sides of the pedestal are the names of the soldiers who fought in the war. It is surrounded by iron railings.

The idea of erecting a memorial in this district of Dukinfield began to be discussed in August 1917. A committee was established, funds raised and a memorial commissioned from Wiloughby, Wilde and Sons. It was placed on land at the junction of Victoria Street and Cartwright Street presented by Alderman H. G. Turner. The memorial, costing £282, was unveiled by Alderman Turner in March 1920. It is a good example of a district memorial. On a number of occasions over the years the statue has been damaged which may explain the rather incongruous face and hat of the present statue.
