Notes

Drinking fountain. Square rusticated stone base to which trough was attached at one side (now removed). This supports four polished granite pillars at each corner each with foliated capitals. These support a canopy with a decorated pediment on each side and surmounted by a stone cross. Aedicule contains drinking bowl and faucets.

The original fountain had a water trough for animals but this no longer exists. It was erected by T. M. Walsh, a former resident of the district, in memory of his son, George Baker Walsh, and donated to the council at a civic ceremony on 28 September 1908. Accepting the fountain on behalf of Hale council, F. R. Hughes said that it was "one of the most magnificent gifts yet presented to Hale." He also praised Mr Walsh's "deep love and sympathy for dumb animals."(1) It had been intended originally to place the fountain on Wilmslow Road but when, following the demolition of a brewery, the site became available, it was decided to site it here. The base is made of Tegsnose stone from Macclesfield.
