Bronze statue of soldier in full battle dress, with wound to right arm, carrying spiked German helmet. On stepped stone pedestal which contains bronze plaques listing names of fallen on lower plinth.
According to General Beauvoir de Lisle, the memorial, with its representation of a battle-scarred Tommy, reminded those present at the unveiling of the endurance and bravery of the troops. The sculptor had served in the army himself, and sought to represent a soldier who had endured the heat of battle. Wilcoxson's statue had been exhibited at the Royal Academy, receiving "the commendation of many eminent critics," as well as an invitation to exhibit from the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. The memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of Chester.(1)
