Notes

Balcony with carved support. The balcony supported by a female figure with arms half-raised, her long hair reaching down to her breasts.

Leigh Town Hall was designed by the local architect, J. C. Prestwich. The building, in the late Renaissance style, was opened with suitable ceremony in July 1907. The main façade overlooks the Civic Square (formerly the Market Place) and is asymmetric. On the far left on the first floor is a balcony which leads out from a committee room. It is supported by a female figure with her arms half-raised, her long hair reaching down to her breasts. The carving was the work of Farmer and Brindley who were also responsible for the borough coat of arms carved in bold relief above the main entrance and the carved corbels, crests and putti on the windows on the Market Street elevation.
