'The monument depicts bombarded buildings similar to the ones that still remain in the Spanish town of Belchite.' 1 (Evening Post 20/8/92)

The sculpture cost 22,000 GBP. The opening ceremony was attended by nearly 50 members of the International brigade from around the country.2

The Spanish Civil War, and the fight against fascism.

Inscriptions

On plaques either side of the sculpture: "In honour of the volunteers who left Nottinghamshire to fight in the International brigade, Spain 1936-1939. They went because their open eyes could see no other way. No Pasaran." The plaques then list the five who died and were buried in Spain, and the thirteen who returned.
