Notes | ||
Wrought iron gates and railings to north west face of house. Black painted square section railings with decorative scrollwork and finials with gold painted detailing. A stag in a half-barrell or tub surmounts the decorative work above the gates, with three intertwined initials set into it: RAR, with the second R facing backwards.
Early eighteenth century gates commissioned by the third or fourth baronet, both of whom were called Robert Austen. Gates restored in 1963. Hall Place itself is a Tudor building, Grade 1 Listed, built in 1537-40 for Sir John Champneys, a former Lord Mayor of London, and extended in the 17th century. It had a succession of owners including the notorious Francis Dashwood of the Hell-Fire Club.(1)
