Notes

Sculpted frieze. Figures below roofline depicting various trades and other activities. The reliefs are in white stone set into the brickwork of the building. Each one shows a figure engaged in the activity. Some figures look as if from ancient times, some from modern. Across the top of the reliefs, inscribed in capital letters, sometimes running behind the figures' heads, are the names of the activities. Sculpture: a kneeling naked figure with body facing to the right, looking back over shoulder to a sculpted torso on a square plinth. One hand stretches back to the work, the other holds a chisel. Merchandise: two figures, one on the left sitting crosslegged, the right one kneeling towards him. The sitting one holds a string of beads in his hands, the other is offering goods to him. There are bales behind them and a capstan to the right. Needlework: a naked figure sitting on a curved seat, facing towards the left where is part of a spinning wheel. The figure has cloth on the knees and is sewing with a needle and thread in right hand. Pottery: A man sitting on the ground with a bare torso and trousers, legs stretched out to right side holding a pot in his hand in front of him at waist level. He is looking at it with his other hand to his chin as if in deep thought. Three other pots of different sizes are ranged on a three-tiered stand to the right. Building: a figure with bare torso, wearing trousers and boots, crouching with knees sideways to the right, with left hand stretched out to a block and tackle beside him, and the right one holding a trowel above some cement on the ground. Carpentry: a kneeling figure facing to left holding a piece of wood out and looking along it. In his other hand he has a plane which is resting on the ground, and a saw stands upright at the left and side. He wears trousers with the braces hanging down. Plastering: a crosslegged figure seated on the ground, wearing overalls and a cap. He holds a mortar board up in his right hand and is looking at it, and another plastering tool in his left. Shipping: a naked figure seated on a low stool facing to the left with one leg outstretched. He holds a three-masted sailing ship balanced on his right hand and forearm. Chemistry: a crosslegged seated figure with a skirt comprising concentric rings round him. He holds up a test-tube? In his hand and is looking at it, with another one in the other hand across his body. There is an apparatus set up next to him. Cricketer (cannot see title on this): a figure in cricketing clothes with cap, shin pads and gauntlets. He is kneeling with legs to the side, right leg bent up. One hand holding a ball is towards the wicket which is flying apart, and he is looking forward holding the other one up (in appeal?) Skater (cannot see title on this): a streamlined action figure wearing skates, both legs bent, one stretched out behind, and both arms stretched back as if going at speed.
