Notes

Above the main doors to the church, a glazed ceramic panel in a semi-circular tympanum, depicting the Archangel Michael slaying Satan in the form of a dragon. St Michael is in the centre, clothed in white, with a long staff with a cross at the top and a spear with a pointed end which is in the dragon's mouth. The creature is pale green and is on its back with its head up, its tail curling up at the right, and large ribbed wings in green and blue behind it. In a band round the top edge are four angels' heads, two on each side. At the bottom are two full length angel figures with coloured wings and gold haloes. St Michael has multi-coloured wings in layers of white, red, mauve, yellow and green. Behind are bands of blue, possibly with clouds, and yellow with a sunburst. The whole is very colourful and attractive with soft tones.

The church was begun in 1899, consecrated in 1906, and completed in 1936. In March 1944 it was destroyed by bombing then rebuilt in 1955-56.

St Michael the Archangel slaying Satan in the form of a dragon. St Michael is one of the seven archangels. In the Bible, in the Book of Revelation, there is an account of a great battle in Heaven when St Michael and the faithful angels drove out the devil and the other angels who had revolted against God. He is thus regarded as the protector of the Church and is depicted with a banner and a sword, fighting a dragon.
