Notes

Circular, doughnut-shaped sculpture, moulded and carved. Around the outer edge of the circle are birds in flight; around the inner edge are houses and dwellings. A wooden frame beneath the work looks as though it held a plaque which was missing on the day of the site visit, 20 July 1999, possibly vandalised.

Kevin McKeon Project Co-ordinator Unveiled by Stephen Timms, MP for Newham North East The sculpture arose from a collaboration with two housing trusts, London and Quadrant Trust and Southern Housing Group. They commissioned Theatre Venture to work with local young people on a permanent artwork which would mark the completion of 80 new homes in Beckton. Sixteen young people from the local area, aged between 7 and 16, took part in the project and created a large circular sculpture which was then mounted on the gable end of one of the houses in the development. The piece was first moulded in clay, then cast in plaster, then in fibreglass resin which was finally coated in aluminium. 'The work shows a flock of skylarks encircling models of the young people's homes. The theme came from local stories about the number of skylarks that used to be seen in the area'.(1)
