Sixteen stainless steel grid panels, with stencilled patterns cut through them, set around the base of the tree trunks flush with the ground at pavement level. Panels themselves are covered over with wire mesh grids to protect them and to deter vandalism.
'The project began in January 1997 when a group of young people from St Marks Centre Beckton Youth Project applied for a grant from the Arts Council Lottery Board to help them make a piece of public sculpture for their local area. Their application was successful. Working together with the Youth Zone at Beckton Globe and Theatre Venture and with the help of sculptor Cedric Christie, they produced 16 decorative metal plates which are now sited under the trees at Beckton Globe. The plates depict a mixture of activities that take place at the centre'.(1) 'Eventually, after experimentation in clay, casting and drawing, the group decided on designs in silhouette which could easily be transferred into metal and placed around the bases of the trees. Themes and ideas were discussed and the final designs depict a mixture of activities that take place in the centre as well as other interests of the young people involved. These designs were brought to artist Cedric Christie who transferred them carefully to stainless steel, keeping the "hand-drawn" feeling of the originals. In April 1999, the works were installed on site and will provide a permanent and exciting feature in Beckton. The work is testament to the skills, imagination and enthusiasm of all the young people involved - in particular in seeing this long project through from start to finish'.(2)
