Notes

Circular column mounted on a stone (possibly granite) base, square with chamfered corners, and two stone blocks mounted as steps up to two drinking bowls, with taps (not working). Patterned marble surface around central portion of column, on the east-facing side of which is mounted an oval plaque, incised as above.

Arthur William Regelous, popularly known as Peter, died in a fire at 423 Hackney Road on the night of April 19th/20th 1902 trying to save the lives of the occupants, Mrs Alice Maud Denman and her four children, all of whom were killed. The tragedy had a great impact on the area and the funerals of the victims were attended by massed crowds. A fund was set up by the Mayor of Bethnal Green 'in aid of the sufferers by the fire'(1) to which the Princess of Wales contributed a cheque for £10, and the memorial drinking fountain, with commemorative plaque, was erected the following year, in 1903.
