Notes

Shows two skeins of intertwined ropes or threads standing upright on a rectangular base.

Commissioned as part of the Bethnal Green City Challenge Regeneration Programme. Following a nationally advertised competition the two artists, brother and sister, were selected. They worked with the Rope Makers Guild to produce the design. A 100 year old rope was made into an even bigger piece of rope. There was no official unveiling ceremony, it just 'appeared'. The giant thread motif refers to the long history of the garment industry in this area, as well as being a symbol of the many cultures or 'strands' that make up this community.

Signals the entrance to Brick Lane Market.
